Project 1: Audio Editing
Task 1 - Sound for Visual
For week 4, we were assigned to a project where we need to do dubbing and also put a couple of sound effects to a silent video clip from a Disney Soul movie.
List of sounds FX: (downloaded from youtube)
1. Child laughing
2. Woman laughing
3. Car driving
4. Sound of wind
5. Footstep on concrete
6. Falling leaf onto ground
7. Tree rustling in the wind
List of dubbing sounds:
1. Conversation between a cat (Joe Gardner) and the guy (22)
2. Deep breath
3. Two-woman conversation
4. Leaf falls onto the hand

When I dubbed the conversation between the character, I try my best to use a different tone. However, for some words, it is quite hard so I added effect to the cat voices. Because the cat's voice should be the sound of a grown-up man. The effect that I am using is "Bass" and also "Pitch Shifter"

Also, I encounter a problem, because when I do recording my voice, the outcome is not very nice. My voices are not clear enough, so I added some effect to enhance it.
Pic 1.3 - "Parametric EQ" & "Dynamic Processing" effect panels
For the sound FX of the girl laughing, car sound, female conversation whichever is quite far from the character. I use the same effect which is parametric EQ to make it sound muffled or have a distance.

Task 2 - Sound Shaping
In this second task, we only get 5 samples of voices where we need to record ourselves and change them into the samples.
I do not record myself, the lecturer already gives us a voice that we can use for this task. So I just trim it from the sample voices and put it into the layers. And ready to change it into the voice of a phone call, coming from the closet, bathroom, and underground cave.
Fig 2.1 Reverb effect for voice from the cave and toilet
For the toilet I make it muffled a bit, the reverb is only a bit not like the voice from inside a cave.

Task 3 - Sound Editing
For the final exercise for project 1, we were given a drive folder, and there are 3 audio files. Mr. Martin gave us the instructions to magnify the explosion sound, as it was too short, make the punch effect have 2 more punches in them, and lastly, make the sound sample have an alien voice.
Fig 2.4 Explosion sounds
So we were given the explosion sound and we need to make it similar to the example that is given, Where there is a building sound before the actual explosion. So I use the original sound and do a reverse speed and also tick the maintain pitch.

Fig2.6 Punch Sound effect
So we only got one single punch sound. What I did in here is just duplicate it 4 and the first punch is really quiet and then the last punch is the real sound.

Reflections
I experience a lot in this project from how to do dubbing and also by this project enhancing me to do a full observation on what kind of surrounding sound in this short video of Soul. It is fun to do this exercise because there is no right or wrong, we can just put every possible sound that can be heard in the middle of New York Street.
