PROJECT 1: DEVELOP SHORT STORY

  1. This project requires you to develop a 30-second - 1-minute short story that is going to be a 2D animation as the final output.

  2. Develop the story from each week's activities progressively:

    1. Story Ideas - get ideas on various techniques such as writing what you know, what if statement, and character & world.

    2. Character Development - from your ideas, develop your main character by giving his or her obstacles (external & internal), goals, want vs need, and character arcs.

    3. Setting - putting the character into the right setting such as era, world

    4. Story Arcs and Theme - inciting incident, 3 acts structure, logline

  1. Deliverables:

    1. Write a report in a Word document that consists of:

      1. Story Title

      2. Logline

      3. Synopsis

      4. Theme

      5. Character Description

      6. World Description

      7. Script

    2. Export as pdf

    3. Update all the progress in the e-portfolio

Progress

Week 1
In the first week, we get introduced to the module information booklet. The lecturer tells us what will be our project and what we are going to learn from the module.

Week2
In the second week, we saw a video from a Pixar storyteller talking about how we are all storytellers.

Learn the basic stuff to create a compelling story.
1) Inspiration for a story
2) Write what you know
3) What if
4) Character & World

Week 3
Learn how to put character into plot development through 3 acts structure using techniques such as story spine. As we go along, we will define what the character, conflict, setting, and theme that should be visualized in the story.

This week, we need to develop our story. Here I come out with my story talking about:

"It all starts with a little boy named Jamie, he is walking in the middle of a forest full of plants and animals. Suddenly he hears a chopping down tree sound, Jamie feels confused about where the sound is coming from. Then he ran in a random direction, trying to look for the source of the sound. After a couple of times trying to find the location of the sound, he is getting closer and closer to the source. Jamie was so shocked because he saw another of himself chopping down trees one by one. But when Jamie tried to run towards him, suddenly all the things in there glitched out and then all blacked out. Jamie takes off his VR and puts it down on the ground. And it turns out that all of that is just a simulation and the world is already in almost extinction state because the sun is already so big, so there are no trees everywhere only dry land."

The lecturer said, the story is already nice, but I can add the trigger before the character faces the problem, which later on I will add like the character will suddenly see a tree got burned down out of nowhere.

Week 5
In our fifth week, we revise our story based on the feedback that we get from week 3. And also we learn more about character development in the class. Learn how to develop a character by understanding the character's wants and needs, conflict, and stake, and developing the character's arc.

After this week, on week 6 we need to submit our project 1 and below will be my revised storyline with the other deliverables.
