Interactive Narrative Design || Project 1

Learnings

After week 1, I join the narrative design class. I need to do a bit of research on Twine apps. Firstly, I go to youtube to find tutorial videos about twine.

Youtube Links

From that video, I learn all the basics like how to make links that connect between each passage, adding music, sound effects, background images, and images. That does not take so long, because I have learned about HTML and CSS before.

After I have done with the basics. I try to find what others who have done twine games look like. I search for it only, and I found one good twine game on youtube.

From that video, I know that twine can beyond then what I have learned so far. There is a lot of interaction that I can put inside Twine. Such as, you can reveal text in certain seconds, and not every link must go to another passage. These kinds of features are what I want to try. So I directly search for it in the twine documentation and also twine forums.

When I jump into making my stories. I realize that I do not have any control over the sound control in the Harlowe story format, I only can do that in the SugarCube story format. Which I do not like to use, because there is a sidebar that is really annoying to me.

I search online, on how to add music and have full control of it. And finally, I found someone mentioning Harlowe Sound Library. Basically, by adding CSS and javascript from them, we can use the sugar cube story format function but in Harlowe story format which is cool.

Now after, I import all the CSS and Javascript code into my Twine project. I have full control of my sound. I can play, loop, stop, and change the volume in Harlowe.

After I learn, I make two story. One is about a journey of a cat that travel around finding friend who have mental problem and help them. And another one is about a character that come into a labyrinth of mind, where there the character will go through a bully situation.

Based on that story, I propose it to Dr. Charles. And I got comment that:

For the first story, the world would be too big, and also the topic is to wide. And basically the second one has more potential, because I can research more about it, about bullying.

From there I got commented, that I need a proper storyline. So I make one

And after my storyline is done, it is time to convert it into twine, where player can pick their choices and then lead them to a different endings.
