Fig 1 Project 2 brief pdf

So from the beginning of our first class, we already get this brief where later on we are gonna upload our 2nd project to HONOR Competition. So the theme is either renewal of life or cultural celebration. And I pick renewal of life because that is what I really know about. I do not really know about culture.

So I did research about renewal, and mostly it is about rebirth and reborn. In my head, I think about phoenix. However, at that time I really think that is really common. So I want to make something different. Renewal also means rebuilding. So I think this word also connects with our world which keeps rebuilding from the ancient era into now and maybe to the future.

So I do a sketch first for the first digital triptych, and here is the sketch

Fig 2 Sketch

From here I try to make the character first, trying to find which style I want to pursue with the rest of my digital triptych.

Fig 3.2 Character experiments

So I really like the left character one, because I really like it, 3D in illustrator will only make my artworks look ugly because the lighting in Illustrator is quite hard to control. So I try to put my character and the background together. However, I do not really like it, because my character does not stand out really much.

Fig 4 First attempt

So I try something else. I try to look at Pinterest what kinds of animals have many features that can be edited, so people know that the era is changed. And my final idea is to use a tiger as my character because I can change it from a sabertooth to a tiger, and then the last is a cyborg. Here is my second attempt.

I really like how my design looks, so I proceed to make the other two remainings. And here is how they look like combine together.

Fig 6 Final outcome

After we have done with our design we need to put it into the HONOR mockup template and then submit it to the competition.

Reflections
I can't say I experience a lot, however, I really like to do a competition, not because of the prize, but because in the competition it is really like making it for a client. Not just design what we think is nice but there is a theme that we need to follow. I also honed my design research skill when doing this project.
